Adapted by Mark Shanahan
Based on the novella by Charles Dickens
Directed by Tom Quaintance
1st Rehearsal: 11/9/21, Open: 12/4/21, Close: 12/24/21

Note from Director: A small cast, wildly theatrical adaptation of Dickens' classic is filled with heart and tailored specifically for Virginia Stage Company. Seeking four actors who are game to create a new Carol. Seeking one violinist in the bunch, accordion, percussion, or any other musical skills, vocal or instrumental, a huge plus. Type, age, ethnicity, gender identity not important other than it is critical to have a widely diverse acting company. This is a Carol representing our entire community, rather than an English Carol in a snow globe. British dialects could be used in certain roles but are not necessary as a base. People of color are especially encouraged to audition.

By Larissa FastHorse
Directed by Jessica Holt
1st Rehearsal: 12/28/21, Open: 1/22/22, Close: 2/6/22

Note from Director: In her note on casting, playwright Larissa FastHorse writes: "People of color that can pass as white should be considered” and we are very much encouraging actors who identify in this way to audition. Actors must have strong comedic skills & an adventurous sense of play.

Sypnopsis of Play: "The Thanksgiving Play" is satirical comedy in which the four hyper-politically correct, white protagonists try to devise a play about the first Thanksgiving...without any input from Native Americans. The play pokes fun at political correctness, social wokeness, and cultural assumptions.

High school drama teacher Logan is desperate to save her career. Always ready to rock the boat, she is now facing a petition that calls for her termination. With the help of several educational and cultural awareness grants she brings together three actors that will devise a play about the first Thanksgiving. Or Native American Heritage Month. Or just November in general. With yoga instructor (and boyfriend) Jaxton, elementary teacher Caden, and professional actress Alicia, Logan is out to save her career and tell a culturally conscious story about what it means to be Native American ... even though all of the performers are white.

[CADEN — CAST] Male Identifying, White, 30+. The academic. Awkward elementary school history teacher with dramatic aspirations but no experience. His dream is to have his plays performed by semi-professional actors.

[JAXTON — CAST] Male Identifying, White, 30+. A yoga practitioner and actor. Politically correct to a fault, a big one. He’s that confident guy everyone loves, but his logical PC thinking takes weird turns. Self-described “vegan ally.”

[LOGAN] Female Identifying, White, 30+. The high school drama teacher that’s always pushing the envelope in potentially inappropriate ways. Earnest about theatre and proving herself. “Woke,” vegan, nauseated at the mere mention of turkey.

[ALICIA] Female Identifying, White, 30+. Has looks that would have been cast as ethnic in 1950s movies. Without guile. Sexy and hot, but not bright.
