We are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as South West Africa, from the German Sudwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915

By Jackie Sibblies Drury

Directed by Mayah Burke

We are looking for a cast of 2 BLACK MEN, 2 WHITE MEN, 1 BLACK WOMAN and 1 WHITE WOMAN. (All gender identities are encouraged to apply)

A group of actors gather to tell the little-known story of the first genocide of the 20th century. We Are Proud to Present … takes place largely in a rehearsal room that descends from collaborative to absurd as a group of idealistic actors—three black and three white—attempt to recreate the extinction of the Herero tribe at the hands of their German colonizers. Along the way, they test the limits of empathy as their own stories, subjectivities, assumptions and prejudices catalyze their theatrical process. Eventually the full force of a horrific past crashes into the good intentions of the present, and what seemed a faraway place and time comes all too close to home.

Jackie Sibblies Drury’s We are Proud to Present a Presentation… explores the forgotten history of the Namibian genocide that took place from 1884-1915. This show works as an awareness piece of erased history while also delving into the exploration of the mind of the actors who put on the presentation itself. This play challenges the audience to discuss how we, as an artistic community, can talk about Blackness, and how difficult it can be for all people to discuss Blackness in settings that are diverse. Putting on this play now does the important work to challenge both the actors and the audience and their views, really getting into the nitty gritty of what racial inclusion should look like in 2021, and questioning the differences between performative activism and true ally-ship. Simultaneously, by discussing the events in Namibia it gives the audience a worldwide view of racism and how it impacts not just us in America, but everywhere.

This will be a LIVE, outdoor show, with in person rehearsals, and in person auditions. There will be a small stipend provided for actors.

Auditions will be held on May 7th, 2021 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm at Maker Park, 450 Front Street, Staten Island NY 10304.
