Organizational Summary:

Playwrights Horizons is a writer's theater and a theater school, both dedicated to the support, development and innovation of contemporary American playwrights from all backgrounds and communities, and to the production of their new work.

Managing Director 

Position Summary:

Plans, directs, and manages Playwrights Horizons’ social justice initiatives and accountability strategies, both in our producing theater uptown on 42nd Street and in our theater school downtown near Astor Place. This position reports directly to the Managing Director and is also supported by  the Playwrights Horizons’ Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion working group, which consists of staff leadership, staff from across the organization, board, and members of Generation PH leadership committee.

Primary Responsibilities:

       Manage the execution of our current, ongoing commitments to anti-racism, equity and social justice in all forms and practices.

       Lead progress with staff and board of directors on related goals outlined in our recent recommendation report and in our overall strategic plan (currently in formulation).

       Develop and oversee new projects and initiatives related to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) efforts at Uptown and Downtown locations. 

       Partner cross-departmentally to ensure all communications and practices are consistent with our EDI values and are implemented appropriately.

       Consult and strategize with Artistic and Production departments to ensure our values of equity and anti-racism are integrated throughout the creative process.

       Consult and strategize with our Theater School’s staff to ensure our values of equity and anti-racism are integrated in the management and delivery of our pre-professional training program.

       Consult and strategize with the theater’s artistic staff as they devise and develop new programs or initiatives that further our stated values.

       Assist with research and coordination of ADA accommodations and execution of any outreach and/or initiative to make our organization more accessible for people with disabilities.

       Partner with Human Resources to maintain updated organizational policies and best practices, including hiring practices in the Employee Handbook, as needed.

       Partner with Human Resources to organize annual trainings for anti-racism, anti-bias, bystander intervention and sexual harassment prevention for all departments.

       Oversee the theater’s EDI working group and affinity groups to develop goals and strategies for equity work.

       Collaborate with the Marketing Department to identify, build and strengthen relationships with arts and community-based organizations in and around New York City, with an intention to expand access to our work and create new audience development initiatives.

       Work closely with our demographic data collection team to ensure proper data collection, analysis, and reporting to EEOC, etc.

       Manage budget in relation to EDI initiatives.

       Required to work at our Downtown location at least once per week.

       Engage in special projects and other duties, as assigned.

Skills & Experience Requirements:

       Five to seven years of relevant experience with a demonstrated track record in achieving results in project management and strategic planning. 

       Extensive facilitation experience, especially in the realm of EDI preferred.

       Diversity and Inclusion Certificate is preferred.

       Ability to work well inter-departmentally.

       Knowledge of ADA accommodations is a plus.

       Proven track record of ability to bring a project from start to finish successfully.

       Understanding of the theater landscape and a basic understanding of the playmaking process.

       Self-starter with a strong work ethic and a fine-tuned attention to detail who can work independently and with a team.

       Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written.

Salary: $58,500
