BREAKDOWN

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

NOTE ABOUT THE PRODUCTION:
This will not be a traditional production of SUPERSTAR (it will not be set in biblical times). For context, think Handmaid’s Tale; a time in the not-so-distant dystopian future, where a fundamentalist regime (that treats women as property of the state) is in the early stages of creating a totalitarian society and overthrowing the country as we know it. Jesus (and his followers) are part of a resistance movement opposing this regime. Mary, a prisoner of the regime, is freed and joins Jesus and his followers in the resistance. This cast should feel like “real people” (as opposed to polished musical theater performers). Acting is AS IMPORTANT as singing! The cast will be a group of people who are totally unique with lots of personality and who make interesting, brave, and bold choices. ALL ETHNICITIES ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT UNLESS SPECIFICALLY NOTED IN THE DESCRIPTIONS.

ENSEMBLE:
This production will be physical and active, and all actors must be comfortable with climbing, with being on their knees (at times), and with quick costume changes. Please do not submit for consideration if you have any fear of heights or do not feel as though you will be able to handle the basic physical requirements that will be asked of you during this production.

PRIEST - 20s-40s. Male identifying. Excellent singer (E3-D5). Fellow ‘priest’ (and leader of the regime) at the side of Caiaphas and Annas.

PETER – 20s- 30s. Male identifying, baritone (D3-G4) Featured Ensemble role. Devoted to Jesus and the movement, yet denies him when confronted by the regime.

SIMON - 20s- 30s. Male identifying, tenor/high baritone (D3-Bb4(+). Featured Ensemble role. A true rebel. Not afraid to fight.

MALE APOSTLES- 20s-40s. Male Identifying. Any ethnicity. Four male identifying dynamic, interesting, and unique individuals. Apostles and other ensemble parts. Excellent versatile, strong rock, pop or soul singers. All vocal ranges will be considered. From this group of 4 individuals, 2 will need to be strong dancers (though all are excellent singers). Additionally, principal coverage will be assigned from this ensemble.
