Esther - 30s, Female, African-American - Esther is the protagonist of the play. Esther Mills is an African American seamstress specializing in delicate lingerie. Plain, driven, passionate. She has come to New York in search of her dreams; she dreams of an independent life and of opening her own beauty parlor for black women. She is a gifted seamstress in high and constant demand with diverse clients from Upper East Side women to prostitutes. Esther enjoys her life, but she cannot help yearning for love. She feels the pressure of aging without marriage. As a result, she finds herself vulnerable to the attentions, charms and romance of George, a man she knows only through letters. Although she is more in love with his letters, she hopes she will one day grow to love him. Because she believes he is a good man, and her only chance, she accepts his sudden marriage proposal when it comes.
Mrs. Dickson - 50s, Female, African-American - A widow, beyond middle age, who runs the rooming house where Esther lives. She is cultured, educated, and well kept. Mrs. Dickson has known Esther for nearly 20 years. She feels a deep maternal fondness for Esther. She can be as harsh as she is compassionate. She acquired the boardinghouse after the death of her husband.
Mr. Marks - 30s, Male, Romanian Jewish immigrant - A Romanian-born fabric seller, Mr. Marks is a gentle, handsome orthodox Jew about the same age as Esther. Despite their racial and cultural differences, he and Esther feel strongly drawn to each other. Mr. Marks is deeply religious and committed to the traditions of his family and culture. Yet his greatest delight comes from Esther's visits. They share a sensuous pleasure in beautiful fabrics and a fascination with the history of those fabrics. They also share a love of their individual faiths and a desire to do what will bring pleasure to others. Over the course of the play, Mr. Marks's adherence to the strictest rules of his religion and traditions weakens as his love for Esther grows. Their love is revealed in small gestures with great meaning.
George - 30s, Male, Barbadian immigrant - A laborer from Barbados who initiates correspondence with Esther while he is working to build the Panama Canal. George is well built, ruggedly handsome with a melodious voice. George is at first a wonderful man; romantic and charming. He woos Esther so gently that she cannot help but be struck by him. He writes romantic, flowery letters that make her develop a real affection for him, and he appears to be falling for her too. Once in New York, he reveals who he really is. She learns George paid someone to write the letters, and the man she has married is quite different.
Mayme - 30s, Female, African-American - Mayme is an African American prostitute who is Esther's customer. Stunning, sensual, comfortable in her body, brassy. Mayme, through her lingerie orders, has become good friends with Esther (despite Esther's disapproval of Mayme's career), Although she is more experienced than Esther, she still has a softer side. They confide in each other about their hopes and dreams. Originally, Mayme came to New York with the hope of making a living playing ragtime piano (and she is good at this) which she now knows isn't pragmatic.
Mrs. Van Buren - 30s, Female, Caucasian American - A wealthy client of Esther. Mrs. Van Buren hopes the lingerie will reawaken her husband’s interest in her and revive their failing marriage. Additionally, she and her husband have been unable to conceive a child. Falling prey to the expectations of the times, she becomes insecure and lonely. She looks forward to Esther’s visits. As Esther cannot write, Mrs. Van Buren assists in the correspondence between Esther and George. Later in the play, she displays definitive feelings for Esther by kissing her.
