The David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center opened in April 1964 as the New York State Theater. The theater was designed by the renowned architect Philip Johnson, built with funds from the State of New York, and given to the City of New York as a home for performing arts organizations. Today, the theater is home to the New York City Ballet as well as a growing number of national and international touring performing arts groups.


The Front of House Assistant will assist the Front of House team during events and performances under the direction of the Event Operations Manager. The Front of House Assistant is a seasonal, hourly position and is nonunion affiliated.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Liaise between Event Operations Manager, FOH Coordinator, ushers, clients, and other venue managers.

• Smiles, greets, directs, and lends assistance to patrons during assigned events and performances.

• Provide a positive and consistent presence in the theater for interaction with patrons, clients, and venue managers.

• Able to actively engage patrons in a courteous manner and anticipate patrons needs.

• First line of defense for any patron related customer service issues.

• Able to positively solve customer service issues decisively and appropriately.

• Able to distinguish varying degrees of customer service issues and elevate such issues to the Event Operations Manager or FOH Coordinator.

• Assist with seating late arrivals.

• Assist with ADA compliance, patron mobility issues, and patron mobility equipment as needed.

• Oversee usher chimes and radio assignments and distribution of equipment. 

• Supervise lobby monitors and ensure appropriate content is visible throughout events and performances.

• Replenish programs and inserts as necessary.  

• Perform a house check before every event and performance ensuring that facility egresses are clear, safe, and set up accordingly.  


Minimum Requirements 

• Highest moral character and integrity.

• Relevant experience with at least two (2) or more years as a head usher or usher in a commercial or non-profit performance venue. 

• Possess strong customer service skills and etiquette, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work well with a diverse team and clientele.

• Must be able to work as a team player and keep calm under pressure while handling customer service issues.


• Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

• Work a flexible schedule including days, nights, weekends, and holidays and up to thirty (30) hours per performance week as assigned.

• Maintain knowledge of all venue fire and emergency evacuation plans.

• Able to be certified as Certificate of Fitness for Indoor Safety Personnel (F-03) Certification and CPR.

This is a part-time, hourly position with a maximum of 30 hours per week. Work hours vary according to the event schedule and may include weekends, holidays, and other scheduled work periods as necessary.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the minimum requirements of this position:

• Regularly requires standing for extended periods of time.

• Occasionally requires lifting/carrying up to 25/50 pounds.
