OC is an equal opportunity employer. We do not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), national origin, ancestry, physical or mental disability, legally protected medical condition, family care status, veteran status, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information or any other basis protected by local, state or federal laws. All candidates must be fully vaccinated.

Our 2021/2022 season marks our inaugural year for our 40th season and the first year of the Directing Fellowship. Founded in 1981, Opera Columbus brings the full grandeur of opera to Columbus stages with lush mainstage or alternative space productions and creative education and community engagement programs. Under the vision of General Director + CEO, Julia Noulin-Mérat, Opera Columbus is redefining the very concept of regional opera with original productions that celebrate emerging talent, fresh perspectives, and modern technology, engaging a new, diverse audience for this most magnificent of art forms.

The Directing Fellowship is designed specifically to create early career opportunities for BIPOC stage directors to work on large-scale productions. Our goal is to increase the number of creative leaders from diverse backgrounds in our opera industry by advancing and supporting talented individuals who will have an impact beyond Opera Columbus and to create a ripple effect within our arts community.  This fellowship is dedicated to providing professionals with the tools they will need to become successful, impactful creative leaders.

The Directing Fellow will gain valuable experiences in directing and in production development in their first season, including the opportunity to assistant direct OC mainstage productions and to direct OC projects.  Successful fellows will be invited to return for a second season to direct a mainstage Opera Columbus production. Fellows must be able to commit to full participation for two years.

Opera Columbus welcomes artists for the inaugural year for our 40th season who can read music and have some directing and/or choreography experience; opera-specific experience is not required. However, a strong interest in serving the community through the arts and an interest in opera is required. Language aptitude and dramaturgy experience are a plus.

The first-year residency is 13 weeks in duration with a $6,000 fee stipend, as well as a personal expense stipend. Start date will be November 28, 2021. A Directing Fellow who does not live in the greater Columbus area will also receive housing for in-person residency periods. Opera Columbus is accessible by public transit, though personal transportation is highly recommended.
