17 Jan 2006
"Ethel Merman: The Biggest Star on Broadway" is the title of a new biography by Geoffrey Marks, published by Barricade Books.
The title isn't quite the hyperbole it would seem. Merman was the star of such landmark shows as Anything Goes, Girl Crazy, Annie Get Your Gun and Gypsy. She was a headliner from 1930 until the mid-60s, and introduced countless now classic showtunes to the public, including "I Get a Kick Out of You," "You're the Top," "Anything Goes," "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Some People," "Rose's Turn," "There's No Business Like Show Business," "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly," "Anything You Can Do," and "You Can't Get a Man With a Gun." She sang the songs of nearly every major composer of her time.
Mark is the author of "First Lady of Song: Ella Fitzgerald for the Record" and "The Lucy Book."
The book, running 288 pages, is prices at $24.95.
