Charles Mee's Parisian Love Story Fetes de la Nuit To Make World Premiere at Berkeley Rep

California's Berkeley Repertory Theatre — currently staging Deal Orlandersmith's Pulitzer Prize finalist Yellowman — has nabbed the world premiere of Charles Mee's Fetes de la Nuit to be presented during their 2004-2005 season.

Set in modern-day Paris, Fete de la Nuit mixes scenes, images, dances, songs and performance events to weave a tale of love and romance in which Parisians "attempt to reconcile their history with the multiculturalism of the present," as a release states.

Playwright Charles Mee's works have been staged in many cross-genre presentations including Snow in June at Massachusetts' American Repertory Theatre, an Anne Bogart-directed SITI Company production of bobrauschenbergamerica at BAM's Next Wave Festival and a Martha Clarke- directed production of Vienna: Lusthaus (revisited) at New York Theatre Workshop. The scribe, himself, urges adaptations or reworkings of his texts on his website (http://www.charlesmee.org) as part of his "the (re)making project" — based on the theory that "There is no such thing as an original play."

His works include True Love, First Love, Big Love, Summertime and Wintertime — which is set to make its New York debut at Off-Broadway's Second Stage Theatre, starting Feb. 3.

The world premiere of Fete de la Nuit is made possible by an AT&T:OnStage award of $80,000 to Berkeley Rep — an honor they have received a record-breaking fifth time since its inception 18 years ago.

The current season at Berkeley Rep includes Yellowman (through March 7), Ghosts (Feb. 27-April 11), The Mystery of Irma Vep (April 9-May 23) and a Moisés Kaufman-directed staging of Master Class starring Rita Moreno (May 21-July 4).

Tickets for shows at Berkeley Rep in Berkeley, CA, are available by calling (510) 647 2949 or (888) 4-BRT-Tix. For information, visit www.berkeleyrep.org.
