Hollmann and Kotis at Work on Urinetown Prequel — and Sequel

By Andrew Gans
23 Jan 2004

Tony Award winners Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann, who penned the book and score for the just-closed Urinetown, are at work on a new musical.

Variety reports that the duo have penned a prequel to the Urinetown saga. Hollmann, who wrote music and lyrics for Urinetown, told the industry paper, "The story is totally original, and we consider this one to be another part of a trilogy, of which Urinetown is the center piece. This one will be the first installment of a trilogy."

Kotis, who wrote Urinetown's book and additional lyrics, added, "[This new work] is unproduceable in the same way we thought Urinetown was unproduceable. Its subject matter is absurd and risque. But we do hope to see it produced."

The writing team expect to have a reading of the new musical in April. They are also busy writing the score for a musical version of the film "The Man in the White Suit."

Urinetown began life at the 1999 New York International Fringe Festival. It played a late spring/early summer Off-Broadway commercial run in 2001 and jumped to Broadway, opening Sept. 20, 2001 at the Henry Miller Theatre, after previews from Aug. 27. Urinetown closed Jan. 18, 2004, after 965 performances and 25 previews.
