The Barricades Arise Anew as Les Miz Returns to the Road, Sept. 9 in Atlanta

By Kenneth Jones
03 Sep 2003

After a summer hiatus, the national tour of Les Misérables, the smash international musical that closed on Broadway earlier this year, hits the road again starting Sept. 9 at Atlanta's Fox Theatre.

Presented by Cameron Mackintosh, Les Miz on the road represents the only current, Equity North American staging of the musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg.

The Broadway production ended its 16-year run on May 18, 2003, and is the second longest running show in Broadway history.

Broadway's final Jean Valjean, Randal Keith, returns to the company with James Clow as Inspector Javert, Tonya Dixon as Fantine, Ma-Anne Dionisio as Eponine, Josh Young and Amanda Huddleston as Marius and Cosette, John-Andrew Clark as Enjolras and Michael Kostroff and original Broadway company member, Cindy Benson as the Thénardiers. Nadine Jacobson and Erika Kiyomi Johnson alternate in the roles of Young Cosette and Young Eponine, and Branden Steinagle and Daniel Wright alternate in the role of Gavroche.

"The $4.2 million production coming to Atlanta replicates the Broadway production in its entirety and has set numerous attendance records across the country," according to production notes. "This touring company of Les Misérables is a carbon copy of the original production still running in London and is the same production that has been seen in Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston. It comes to town with the trademark 34-foot turntable, two barricades that weigh over 12,000 pounds, over 1,000 costumes, five fog machines, 422 lighting instruments, 18 orchestra members and 36 cast members."

Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, Les Miz "is an epic saga that sweeps through three turbulent decades of 19th century French history.  The show is also the story of one man, the fugitive Jean Valjean, who is pitted against the self-righteous Inspector Javert, in a lifelong struggle to evade capture."

Written by Boublil and Schönberg, Les Misérables was adapted from the French by Herbert Kretzmer, and has additional material by James Fenton. It was first brought to life at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Barbican Theatre in London by co-directors Trevor Nunn and John Caird. The designers are John Napier (sets), Andreane Neofitou (costumes) and David Hersey (lighting).
