Robert Morse Returns to Capote in L.A. Christmas Memory Dec. 10

By Christine Ehren
16 Dec 2002

After leading the casts of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Sugar, Robert Morse faded from Broadway memories until he starred in the one-man tour-de-force, Tru, playing writer Truman Capote.

On Dec. 10, he returns to playing the author who brought him back to Broadway when he figures in a reading and recording of Capote's A Christmas Memory at the Rubicon Theatre Company's The Laurel in downtown Ventura, CA.

A Christmas Memory is the touching tale of a lost seven-year old who finds the affection he craves in the companionship of Miss Sook. As the holidays approach, the two poor Alabamians prepare fruitcakes, make their own holiday decorations and create special gifts for one another. Even as they suffer through the Depression, Buddy and Miss Sook find love and laughter in the little things in life, whether getting tipsy on the fruitcake moonshine or finding a way to get an extra present out of a long-lost Dad because there's only gifts from Santa under the tree and none from his father.

The original "A Christmas Memory" was published in Mademoiselle Magazine in 1956. In 1966, it was first adapted into an Emmy-winning TV special with Capote as the Narrator and Geraldine Page as Sook.

Susan Clark is the Rubicon's Sook. She won an Emmy Award for the television movie "Babe," after being nominated for an Emmy for the title role in "Amelia Earhart." Her stage appearances include Williamstown Theatre Festival, Seattle Repertory Theatre and Pasadena Playhouse.

A Christmas Memory will be broadcast on Dec. 16 at 7 PM on KKZZ 1400 AM and rebroadcast on KVA 1520 AM on Christmas Eve. There will be one more broadcast on KKBE 105.5 yet to be announced.

Tickets are $20 for Rubicon subscribers, $35 for all others. The Laurel is located at 1006 East Main Street in Ventura. For reservations, call (805) 667-2900.
