Jonathan Pryce to Transfer to Wet End in Liverpool Production of Pinter's The Caretaker
By Mark Shenton
06 Nov 2009
Two-time Tony winner Jonathan Pryce is to reprise his performance as Davies in Harold Pinter's The Caretaker, when it transfers from Liverpool's Everyman Theatre to the West End's Trafalgar Studios.
It will begin performances there Jan. 12, 2010, prior to an official opening Jan. 18, for a run that is booking through April 17. He originally played the role in Liverpool Oct. 2-31. The play, which marked the arrival of Pinter as the seminal playwright of his generation, was originally produced in 1960, so 2010 marks the work's 50th anniversary. It is also the first new West End production of one of his plays since his death last December.
In the play, Davies is down and out when Aston takes him in for the night. Lost in a shoeless world, chasing papers in Sidcup, Davies soon fancies his chances at something more permanent. Then Aston's fiery brother Mick shows up. As the odd couple becomes an odd number, who will be the odd man out?
Pryce, who plays Davies, won his two Tony Awards for the Broadway transfers of Trevor Griffiths' Comedians (1977 Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Play) and Miss Saigon (1991 Tony for Best Actor in a Musical), and he has also won an Olivier Award for his Royal Court Hamlet. He was most recently seen on the London stage earlier this year in the Donmar Warehouse's production of Athol Fugard's Dimetos. Other West End appearances include a revival of Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross at the Apollo Theatre in 2007; Edward Albee's The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? (also at the Apollo in 2004, transferring from the Almeida), and playing Fagin in the original cast of Sam Mendes' 1994 production of Oliver! at the London Palladium. In addition to his Tony-winning performances, he has also appeared on Broadway, taking over from John Lithgow in Dirty Rotten Scoundels at the Imperial Theatre in 2006 and in Accidental Death of an Anarchist in 1984. His TV credits include "Clone," "HR," "Baker Street Irregulars," "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" and "Victoria and Albert"; and for film, "Bedtime Stories," "The Gift," "GI Joe," "My Zinc Bed," "Leatherheads," "The Pirates of the Caribbean" series, "Ronin," "Tomorrow Never Dies," "Evita" and "Carrington" (Evening Standard Award for Best Actor and Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival).
The cast also includes Peter McDonald in the role of Aston, whose theatre credits include Dancing at Lughnasa and Resurrection Blues (both at London's Old Vic Theatre), Exiles and The Aristocrats at the National Theatre; and Glengarry Glen Ross (with Pryce) in the West End. His television and film roles include "Green Wing," "Spooks," "City of Vice," and "The Damned United."
The production is directed by Christopher Morahan, who has worked extensively at the Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre and in the West End. His awards include an Olivier and Evening Standard Award, two BAFTA Awards, three international Emmys and the Directors Guild of Great Britain Lifetime Achievement Award.
