The work of late composer Leonard Bernstein will be performed across Seattle in spring of 2010 as part of Seattle Celebrates Bernstein, which will include full productions, concerts and film screenings.
As part of the festival that runs April-June, Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre will stage full productions On the Town (April 3-May 2, 2010) and Candide (May 25-June 13, 2010). Casting and creative duties will be announced at a later date.
"Leonard Bernstein is one of the few composers who has worked successfully and brilliantly in nearly all of the performing arts including theatre, opera, film and every manner of instrumental and vocal music," said 5th Avenue producing artistic director David Armstrong in a statement. "That makes him the ideal nexus for a festival that will showcase all that Seattle's plethora of world class arts organizations have to offer."
Festival events also include Seattle Film Institute screenings of "On the Waterfront," "On the Town" and "West Side Story." The Seattle Men's and Women's chorus will join to present Glitter and Be Gay, a concert of the work of Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.
The Seattle Symphony will offer A Bernstein Young People's Concert, as well as Season Finale: A Bernstein Celebration, featuring Misha Dichter and the Seattle Symphony Chorale; while the Lake Union Civic Orchestra will perform three dance episodes from On the Town at Town Hall.
Tony-winning composer Martin Charnin (Annie), who made his Broadway debut as an original cast member of West Side Story, will participate in "West Side Story Stories: Memories of Lenny," presented by Showtunes Theatre Company and Seattle Theatre Group. The Seattle Opera also plans to host a panel discussion entitled "Collaborating with Bernstein," featuring artists who worked with the late composer.
Prior to the festival, Pacific Northwest Ballet will present West Side Story Suite, adapted from the musical and featuring the Jerome Robbins choreography, beginning Nov. 5.
