The American premiere of Enda Walsh's comedy The New Electric Ballroom, a companion to his acclaimed play The Walworth Farce, officially opens at St. Ann's Warehouse Nov. 1.
Druid Ireland returns to St. Ann's Warehouse with New Electric Ballroom, which began previews Oct. 27 and will play a limited run through Nov. 22. Walsh's Walworth Farce also made its American debut at the Brooklyn venue.
Walsh directs his play that stars Irish actresses Rosaleen Linehan (Breda), Ruth McCabe (Clara) and Catherine Walsh (Ada) as the sisters central to the story, with Walworth Farce director Mikel Murfi as Patsy, the fishmonger.
According to press notes, "The story unfolds in a small fishing village on the west coast of Ireland, where, night after night, Breda and Clara, two aging sisters, re-live the memories of a single night in the early 1960s when a seductive rock singer at the New Electric Ballroom broke both their fragile hearts. Costumed in their tuille skirts, bolero jackets, pink high heels and red lipstick, Breda, Clara and their much younger sister, Ada remain locked in their story until a lonely fisherman appears as Ada's chance to escape."
The New Electric Ballroom made its world premiere at the Kammerspiele Theatre in Munich on Sept. 30, 2004. The English language premiere was staged by Druid Ireland at the Galway Arts Festival in 2008, and was later presented at the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Prior the American debut, Ballroom played a run at Ireland's Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival.
