O'Connor Will Return to NY Stage in NYMF's Hatpin

By Adam Hetrick
28 Aug 2008

Caroline O'Connor

Award-winning Australian triple-threat Caroline O'Connor will star in The Hatpin for the New York Musical Theatre Festival.

O'Connor, who appeared in the world premiere of The Hatpin for Australia's Kookaburra theatre company last winter, will reprise her role for American audiences when the new musical arrives at the American Theatre of Actors Sept. 15. Performances will continue through Sept. 24.

Featuring music by Peter Rutherford with book and lyrics by James Millar, The Hatpin, according to press notes, "is the true story of a single mother, Amber Murray, who advertised her baby in a newspaper trading column in the hope of saving his life...and ended up embroiled in one of the most captivating, moving and exciting criminal trials in Australian history."

Joining O'Connor will be Paul Kandel (The Who's Tommy), Alexis Fishman (Australia's Shout!), Gemma-Ashley Kaplan (NYMF's The Good Fight), Casey Erin Clark (Frankenstein), Sharone Halevy (Lift), Matt Leisy (Camelot), Mary Catherine McDonald (Unlock'd), Michael A. Pizzi (1776) and Billy Clark Taylor (Houdini).

As with the Australian world premiere, Kim Hardwick will again direct. The design team includes Mark Thompson (original set and costume design) and Martin Kinnane (original lighting and vision design).

Caroline O'Connor made her Broadway debut as Velma Kelly in the revival of Chicago, reprising her award-winning performance from the Australian production. An Olivier nominee for the London revival of Mack and Mabel, O'Connor has appeared in End of the Rainbow, The Rink, West Side Story, Piaf, Bombshells and Into the Woods. She is known for her on-screen tango as Nini Legs in Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge".

NYMF membership tickets are currently available. Single tickets go on sale Sept. 1. For more information visit NYMF.
