Eurydice to Descend at Seattle's A.C.T. Beginning Sept. 5

By Adam Hetrick
27 Aug 2008

Seattle's A Contemporary Theatre has announced casting for Sarah Ruhl's eurydice, which begins performances Sept. 5.

Performed in the round, Allison Narver will direct Ruhl's contemporary take on the Orpheus myth. The production will officially open Sept. 11 and run through Oct. 5.

The A.C.T. production will feature Renata Friedman in the title role with Trick Danneker as Orpheus, Mark Chamberlin as Father, Paul Morgan Stetler as Nasty Interesting Man/Chid, Anne Allgood as Loud Stone, Tim Hyland as Big Stone and Tracy Hyland as Little Stone.

"Ruhl flips the classical myth of Orpheus to focus not on his descent to the underworld to rescue his young bride from death, but on Eurydice's experience of her death and the journey taken," A.C.T. press notes state. "Reunited with her father in Hades, Ruhl's Eurydice is confronted with the surprising and excruciating choice of leaving her father again to re-join her new husband. The play inventively expands on the themes of the myth to embrace not only the powerful force of romantic love, but also the deep bond shared between father and daughter. Ruhl's playfulness and her characteristic light touch in the face of almost unbearable loss catapults the play into a gorgeous, surreal realm of wonder and enchantment."

"Sarah Ruhl is the most exciting young playwright to emerge from the American theatre in more than a decade. Her funny, poetic mind moves through eurydice like a benediction," A.C.T. artistic director Kurt Beattie said in a statement. "The great myth finds a new expressiveness in her heartbreaking interpretation, which is as beautifully momentary as the wind, and as eternal as anyone can imagine."

Designing eurydice are Melanie Taylor Burgess (costume design), Matt Smucker (scenic design), Michael Wellborn and Lynne Ellis (lighting design) and Chris Walker (sound design).

A Pulitzer Prize finalist for The Clean House, Ruhl has penned Dead Man's Cell Phone, Melancholy Play, Late: a Cowboy Song, Orlando, Demeter in the City and Passion Play: A Cycle.
