McKechnie, Fiorello!, As Thousands Cheer and King and I Set for Lyric Season

By Adam Hetrick
27 Aug 2008

Donna McKechnie

Tony Award winner Donna McKechnie will bring her one-woman show Gypsy in My Soul to the Lyric Theatre as part of the company's 2008-2009 season.

As previously reported, Grover Dale, an original cast member of Broadway's West Side Story, will stage that landmark musical for the Dallas theatre company to kick off the season Sept. 5-14.

Following West Side Story will be the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Fiorello!, running Oct. 10-25. Featuring a book by George Abbott and Jerome Weidman and a score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, Fiorello! tells the story of the rise to power of New York's Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia.

Tony-winning A Chorus Line star McKechnie comes to town with two performances of Gypsy in My Soul on Jan. 30 and 31, 2009. McKechnie takes audiences on a trip through her career from a Broadway gypsy in such shows as How to Succeed, Promises, Promises and Company to award-winning leading lady in A Chorus Line and Follies.

The Irving Berlin-Moss Hart revue As Thousands Cheer, including the hits "Heat Wave," "Lonely Heart," "Supper Time," and "Easter Parade," makes its Texas premiere April 24-May 9, 2009.

The final offering of the Lyric season will be Rodgers and Hammerstein's Tony-winning classic The King and I. Running June 19-28, 2009, the production will feature newly restored original Robert Russell Bennett orchestrations played by a full orchestra.

Tickets are available by phoning (972)-252-2787 or by visiting Lyric Stage.

Performances take place at the Irving Arts Center's Carpenter Performance Hall.
